I realize that back on the old TC we were mostly teenagers but....a few years have gone by and we're a bit older and most of us have jobs so..... Here's the thread where we can talk/gripe about our 9 to 5.

I could've posted in this thread about my full-time summer job (from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM every day) but I can't now as summer is over. But now I have part-time jobs again at my university as a 'Biology' department dishwasher (I can go up to 7 hours a week) and a 'Geography' department student marker for a course I took in my first year.

I'm doing my current job for 14 years now. It has its benefits, but I don't think I can do this for many years. My job brings me down too much. I made a list of pros and cons, but it's pretty even. And the most difficult part is that I wouldn't know what I would like better. Most jobs are a drag and I'm afraid to give up my current job. And even if I would figure out what I wanted to do, chances are low that I would get the job I wanted. It's a tough dilemma I don't know how to solve.

Keep working at that job and apply for jobs you want. If you get the new job that you'd want, quit the old job.

I started working for my mom's foundation when I was 17 and stopped when I was 19. For the past 2 summers I interned at an indie game design company, which was a lot of fun sometimes but boring when I had to do repeatitive work. Before I applied there I applied to work at NASA. I made it to a second interview but after that they emailed and said I needed more experience. I don't know if I'll apply again or if I'll work at the indie game design company after I graduate. To be honest I don't really want to work anywhere lol. I just want to do my own thing.

It’s horrible working somewhere you hate but it’s hard to walk away if you’re making good money. I know this sounds corny but follow your instincts. Also looking at other jobs never hurts

I think the weird part about my job is that people are surprised I like it. I work as a cashier at a grocery and I think it’s great. My co-workers and bosses are very nice, it’s very accommodating. I work good hours and make good money but people always ask me if I’m in school or have plans on going back and I really don’t. Why would I put myself in more debt for a degree I may or may not use? Also by the end of my program I really started to resent it. I was working 16 to 20 hours a day at school. I’m in no rush to subject myself to that. I just wish people understood that you don’t need to be a CEO to like your job and sometimes working in a grocery store can be rewarding.

I had an interview for 'Shoppers Drug Mart' (my first ever interview) early that summer but they never called me back. :/ I would love a job as a cashier as I love scanning and bagging things, and I always use the self-checkout at stores when they have them. I hate talking to people but I guess it would be okay once I'd get used to it. Or I'd love a job as a collection person at a store where you collect orders that people made online (like 'Walmart' does now).

Do you get paid for your work? I haven't helped my dad very much at his business as it's an engine and repair business that he does by himself. My mom helps him with the books and I'd like to help with it sort of but I don't know how to do it as my mom hasn't showed me how to do it. She says it's sort of confusing but I feel like I'd maybe be able to do it faster and maybe understand it more since I'm young and I come from a different generation. I'm 10 times better with technology than she is. But I would feel bad working for my dad anyways as once last summer I said I could maybe help him with stuff but he said some comment about how he can't even pay himself so that made me worry and didn't make me want to work for him. I'm not doing that with him if he'd pay me but he hardly gets paid himself.

I worry about that too and I told my parents they didn’t have to pay me always but they said they’d handle it... my mom wants me to do the office work but I really don’t want to, it looks hard

I find that if you ever apply at a grocery store it's better to fill in an application and bring it directly to the store. I got hired off of an online ad but that is RARE for my store. Also if you can avoid it, don't apply at Walmart. They are HORRIBLE to their employees. If you ever need a reference you can use me lol.

Also if you can avoid it, don't apply at Walmart. They are HORRIBLE to their employees. If you ever need a reference you can use me lol. Yeah I took two applications into stores I think but an employee took the papers not the manager so I guess they don't usually call people like that...I do like 'Walmart' but I've applied to their online ads like 6 times and never got one call. And my mom knows a lot about our local store as she's a merchandiser and people who work there aren't happy because they got rid of department managers and they also recently got rid of a lot of checkout tills because they put in two different areas of like 12 self-checkout lanes and there's only like 5- 8 or something actual checkout lanes with people cashiers at them so it would be even harder to get a job as a cashier there now. I also applied at a few dollar stores and I would probably like working there but they didn't call back either. Thank you, that's very nice of you to say and do that. I don't know if I'll get a job at a store as a cashier though as I think I'll have the same full-time summer job next summer as I did this past summer so I won't have time to have a part-time job as a cashier. I guess I maybe could but it would have to be only one or two nights a week or something. I wouldn't want to take on another job I don't think while I'm in university. I have a job at my university as a dishwasher for the 'Biology' department and a job for marking exams for a 'Geography' first-year course and I'm taking 6 courses which is an overload as 5 is the usual full-load for courses in a term, and I've got three labs a week (the afternoon period on the same day every week) for three of the courses, and studying and trying to have some time to myself lol. Next term (winter term) I will be taking either 5 or 6 courses (I'm on the waiting list for one course even still after months of already being registered for it) but I only have one lab (on Friday's which is annoying), and one guy at my summer job on my last day said something about they could maybe have me on part-time if I have time. I'm too busy this term but maybe next term I could even work a few afternoons a week.
