FUNCTION EXPLANATIONS.
So before I was kind of mentioning functions? No quiz beats the study of the actual cognitive functions!
So to put this in layman's terms, these are the things you use every day when you comprehend the world. When you touch something and feel something about it, you are using a process, these play into the functions.
The first thing I must explain is INTROVERTED vs. EXTRAVERTED. In MBTI terms, this is not about how "social" or "outgoing" you are. Many cognitive extraverts are not socially extraverted. Most intuitive extraverts actually believe themselves introverts! It is because of the confusion of social I/E vs. the cognitive version of I/E. Socially I am a bit more ambiverted but I am a cognitive extravert.
A cognitive extraversion means you use this function "outside" of yourself. You use it to bounce off the people or things around you.
Extraverted feeling seeks ethics through "outside" insight and order, like family and group relationships. (IT IS NOT GROUPTHINK I WILL EXPLAIN WHY)
Extraverted intuition gathers ideas through the "outer" world by seeing and taking in the insights around them, and hearing suggestions and ideas.
Extraverted thinking gathers order by organizing their "outer" world into systems and graphs.
Extraverted sensing gathers sensation through the "outer" world in sensory, the here and now, the exact present moment.
A cognitive introversion means you search inward when processing functions, and take these processes through your own heart.
Introverted feeling looks into their own developed belief systems to decide on ethical matters.
Introverted intuition sees the world as a puzzle and goes inward to solve it.
Introverted thinking seeks the truth through finding their own logic, outside of other people's ideas. They are the ones who break something to put it back together to find out how it works.
Introverted sensing gathers information by looking into experience and past methods.
In the simplest sense possible, this would explain most of the functions. But I have some short descriptions which will hopefully help you decide if you use Fe vs. Fi and such. I will also have some notes for commonly confused functions and how to find the differences.
Also, all these functions narrow down into a lettering system. Introverted Feeling is Fi, extraverted feeling is Fe, and so on.
FE VS. FI.
FIRST, feelers are the MOST MISUNDERSTOOD FUNCTION IN MBTI. They often misunderstand each other even. Feeling is not about emotions. Everyone has emotion. If you want a more feeler being about feels response look into socionics. I am less adept with that though. the feeling function is about ETHICS. What is believed to be right and wrong and how focused you are on it. Many people describe feelers by being expressive, but I will tell you anyone in MBTI who explains it like this has spent too much time reading hack tumblr pages that think they know feelers. (and do not take it poorly there is actually some amazing MBTI pages on tumblr like funkyMBTI and all, but there's a lot of bullcrap pages too as there is anywhere. 16personalities is a whole dang website of bullcrap. lol)
An extraverted feeler gathers their ethics from the outside. This does not mean they cannot have their own ethical systems. Fe is "objective" is a way some define it. They want to actually organize the world into their ethical systems (which is why some people really, really dislike Fe types. heh) They do not necessarily groupthink but can be prone to it. Especially an immature Fe, they will want to fit in with their friendgroup or social activities and in turn will change their ethics to those of the people around them. A mature Fe actually has a well developed system they grew over time, and searches for people with their ethical systems. Fe is into group harmony. Talking to people on ethics will get complicated if you disagree on ethical systems, so they prefer to associate with those who believe the same thing they do. For instance, let's look at Jim.
Jim grew up in a family of staunch Christians, went to church, and truly believes the things he learned from church. Jim meets an atheist at school. Jim does not hate the atheist he met, but he prefers to talk to the people he knows share his belief system because his atheist friend creates a conflict of interest. Fe hates conflict. H A T E S. They rather everyone get along and follow their worldview. If we share the same belief system we don't fight about ethics! If only his atheist friend could find God. For a less mature, or stressed Fe type, this may become a forceful reality. Jim will attempt to make this atheist become a Christian, and will go on to this now.
Let us say Atheist friend, George, is an "INTROVERTED FEELER." His view on ethics is totally different from Jim's. George grew up in a Christian family as well, but chose not to believe in God. Why?
The ethical system didn't align with what he felt was right inside. So he shunned this belief system. He does not Jim for believing, though, because to Fi, ethics are highly SUBJECTIVE. They believe everyone has their own reasons and ideas as to why they do things. However, this does not mean George does NOT feel strongly about his own belief system. Since Jim has began trying to push Christianity on him, in turn George has put together proper reasoning for why he chose NOT to believe, and why he disagrees.
There is something here I would like to point out: BOTH FEELERS CAN STAND UP FOR THEIR ETHICS. BUT THEY DO IT DIFFERENTLY.
A common stupid argument is that every Fe type tries to force their belief on you while every Fi type is subjective so they don't care. Bullcrap.
Fe will try and PERSUADE you to their ideas with empathy and kindness. They are actually less forceful. Fi is actually the pushy one. Those who are strong in Fi usually have a lack extraverted thinking, which makes them more HARSH when they share points of view and may come off very COLD. Some Fi types are mistaken for thinkers because they are not necessarily "warm".
So Jim tries to persuade George of all the good things about Christianity, but George upsets Jim when his comeback argument is a bit tactless and cold. They choose not to talk anymore, since their views are becoming so conflicting.
NEITHER FEELER REALLY ENJOYS CONFLICT. Fi rather have peace and open-mindedness toward a different ethical view, while Fe rather have peace and openness in the form of sharing belief systems. Both feel safer in a particular box.
FE NEEDS LIKE THINKERS. They want people who agree with them to be around them.
FI NEEDS LAID-BACK THINKERS. As long as Fi is around other subjective people who allows you to have your own ethical system, they feel safe.
As seen, these types can conflict if the ethics are different. Many Fi types see Fe as groupthinkers who do not think for themselves. Many Fe's think Fi's are cold and too subjective.
BOTH ARE GOOD, AND WANTED. There is a problem in the typing communities against Fe types and sensors. There are biases, don't listen to bullcrap about that.
If you have questions about this first part you can ask, I will have commentary on thinking functions soon.
