Kinda had a thought this morning when I was reflecting on this year. The only worthless people in the world are the panic buyers who cleaned the shelves out. Don't forget the landlords who tried to evict people for not paying their rent after they were made redundant because of the pandemic! To be honest, that’s a one sided viewpoint. Even under these unusual circumstances, you can’t expect to live somewhere for free. Postponing paying rent only works for a short amount of time. Landlords have to pay their bills too.

Shouldn't buy a second property if you can't afford to pay your bills. It's not fair to evict someone in a pandemic, that's what government rent and mortgage pauses are for.

It’s not only mortgages that have to be paid. If they go bankrupt, you both are out. You can’t just stop paying rent. That’s irresponsible. If you lose your job in a different way, you will have to figure out how to live and pay rent too. A pandemic doesn’t change that.

Sometimes I feel like I'm completely worthless. Not right now, but very often. I don't know why. I don't know if this will help you any but you aren't alone in feeling like that. There's many ways that can cause someone to feel like that but, for me, looking at everyone be successful and doing something with their lives causes me to fall down that hole. It sucks wondering where you went wrong. But I can promise you, Daniel, that I have never thought you were worthless. I'm glad you found us here! Remember, you're the only person here I can trust because you like Nutella!

I have no sympathy for landlords buying up property, preventing people getting on the property ladder and causing the gentrification of areas. If you can't afford a few months without rent from your tenant who's been made redundant during a global pandemic, you shouldn't be a landlord.

There are definitely bad landlords, but also many good ones. They simply use their hard earned money and buy property as an investment. Also keep in mind that quite a few own several properties. One renter or a few renters not paying is fine. But when hardly anybody pays, it is a huge problem. Rent is a vital income stream, even if it’s just to pay for utilities and maintenance. On paper these people are rich because of all the property they own. But a lot of their money isn’t available. And truth be told: quite a few people abuse the pandemic to stop paying rent. Look at the US with all the stimulus checks. Many people are using it for luxury instead of paying rent (or other bills).

And it was only $1200 at most per person so it wouldn't have covered most people's rent anyway. Most people spent their money on food. That's not a luxury. www.census.gov/library/stories/2020/06/how-are-americans-using-their-stimulus-payments.html

That's more than lots of people usually make. Still a large group skipped rent/mortgage payments.
Even apart from the pandemic. People regularly are in financial trouble because they make bad financial choices. Instead of buying necessary goods they waste money on alcohol, cigarettes, cars, gadgets, pets or even drugs. Or even those who have a good income try to live above their standard, pile on lots of debts. Once anything goes wrong, they go under.

Can I join club Nutella?! I eat Nutella every morning. Burn the Nutella deniers! I don’t really understand how one can not like Nutella. Liking chocolate is the only thing that unites everyone in this world. Plus the cultural bonus that Nutella brings with it: families bonding at the breakfast table eating their Nutella on bread or rolls. Even the Taliban get a smile on their face doing that.

I didn't include unemployment benefits because I didn't know if the same people who are qualified for it are the same people who are not paying rent. To qualify for unemployment you had to have lost job through no fault of your own. For example, imagine you are a minimum wage worker that comes into contact with a lot of people and your elderly parents live with you. You obviously wouldn't want to chance your parents dying so you quit. You wouldn't qualify for benefits and you and your elderly parents will soon be homeless because you can't afford to pay your share of the rent anymore. A lot of people are going to be in this position.

A lot of people are going to be in this position. I mean not even that in the UK. If I couldn't live with my dad for a bit, I wouldn't have been able to cover rent. My job ended abruptly because of the circumstances, I'm a student so I'm not eligible for most benefits, and the benefit I am eligible for requires an interview which obviously weren't taking place because there's a pandemic happening. I've been lucky that I could go and live with my dad to avoid having to continue my lease, but if I hadn't had that I would have struggled. I'm also lucky because my current landlord is a friend's parent and isn't financially reliant on this flat's rent, so she's told me to pay when I can and if I can't we can arrange something.
