The second single of Lover got released. The song is called “You Need To Calm Down”. Here’s the lyric video:

Oh my goshhh, I've had it on replay all day because I love it soooo much!! Oh my gosh, it's honestly turned into one of my all time favourite songs by Taylor, mostly because I actually cannot believe how bold and amazingly open Taylor is in the song, adfljadlfj!!! I love it I love it I love it, it's actually making me so much more confident to talk about my opinion on similar topics, and if you disagree, like can you just not step on my gown?! XD Ohhh my gosh, I don't know what to say to do the song justice, but I guess I just feel like it's everything I've ever needed. XD

I’m struggling with this song. ME! was a promising start. I expected a bit more from the rest of the album. But this is a setback. The music is okay, pretty mediocre. The thing that bothers me is how the lyrics don’t fit the rhythm of the song. Too often words are just jammed into the pattern of the music. That makes me cringe. Taylor is so much better than this. But it seems like she lowered the quality bar significantly. I hoped it was just a slip up with reputation, but now she does it again. Also the content is shallow and even confusing. She touches on two subjects: hate towards her and hate towards gay people. She pretty much says nothing about both. Plus it’s a weird combination to put these two things in one song.

Ahhh, I feel like I'm the opposite. XD I love You Need to Calm Down wayyy more than ME!, I think the lyrics in particular are so amazing and loud. XD Ahh, when you say that 'the words are just jammed into the pattern of the music', are you talking about the pre-chorus in particular? Because I personally love that part the most, I think it's really creative to not always have words fit the rhythm perfectly... XD Ahhh, also, um, you also say that she touches on 'hate towards her and hate towards gay people' and that sort of bothers me in a bit of a funny way because that's forming the assumption that Taylor couldn't possibly be gay... XD Um, I don't know how to end this, but I guess it's okay that we disagree and um... yeah!! XD *Edit, ahh, I'm currently contemplating deleting this post because oh my gosh, it's giving me sooo much anxiety for some reason*

It’s perfectly fine to give your opinion and disagree. This is a forum after all, it’s the place to talk about these things. I assume Taylor is not gay, since she always dated men. And she never experienced any hate of that kind towards her personally. The jamming of the words happens throughout the entire song. She already kicks off with it and it keeps coming back. I also think she doesn’t express herself in her usual eloquent style. It’s almost like she’s trying to imitate some kind of slang. I don’t know. Since reputation I feel like Taylor feels the pressure to release music, eventhough the music is not ready, not good enough to be released. Maybe she should’ve gone on a longer break to find some new inspiration. She’s not allowing herself to let it come naturally. It’s more like a business strategy now.

XD Ahhh, maybe that was the style Taylor was going for, I personally love it! XD But I get what you mean that she's using slang-like words for lyrics, but I think that this song is meant to poke fun, just like Shake It Off and Look What You Made Me Do, and not to actually be taken toooo seriously! Also, I get that, it does feel a little like Taylor is feeling pressurised to release new music, but I also think that she's just growing as an artist and experimenting with different sounds. XD I think that's part of being an artist, trying new things? XD

XD I think that's part of being an artist, trying new things? XD An artist can try new sounds, but it’s not a must. Important part is that Taylor wants it herself and not because people expect her to do something different/new every time. Plus if you change your sound, you experiment, you develop it and see if it works out. Once it’s working, you release it. That was part of the 1989 success. Taylor worked so hard and stayed true to herself. She made pop music in her own natural style. It worked out perfectly. After that it was difficult to follow it up. 1989 was a nearly perfect era that put Taylor on top of the music world. She was exhausted and had no idea where to go next. The failure of reputation was trying to copy the approach of 1989. Taylor desperately tried “new” things.. But it was not true to herself. It lacked inspiration and quality. Ironically it wasn’t new and became just as mediocre as other mainstream artist. That was the opposite of what she was aiming for. I’m worried about the Lover era. The mood of the music is different. But it’s starting to look like Taylor is not over her crisis. I always wanted her to move on to different meaningful topics. But if this is the result, she better go back to making country/pop love songs.

XD Ahhh, I agree, but maybe Lover is how Taylor wants the album to be, and she really is doing what she feels like doing? I mean, so many people have shut her down for being political, but she still continues to do it, because that's just what she wants to do! I personally prefer reputation over 1989, but I guess I see where you're coming from. At the same time though, I think that Taylor is just trying out different sounds because no artist stays the same forever, and if some people like the album, they like the album, and if other people don't, they don't. Ahhh, I'm really happy about what Lover is shaping up to be, oh my gosh! XD If that's how you feel, Taylor is probably going to release more "meaningful" songs soon and so yayy!! Ahh, I don't think Taylor should have to go back to making love songs, like... why should she? XD

It made me a bit mad as on Friday at work I was listening to my local pop radio station on the computer at my desk at work and they said they were going to play 'You Need To Calm Down' and they wanted people to let them know what they thought about it (this was the first time I heard it on the radio!) and I texted and said I love it and I've loved her for 13 years and such and after they played it they must've been talking about a poll on 'Facebook' about it and they said 83% don't like it. :/ I voted in the poll too when I saw it and I voted for like.

This song is so remix-worthy. Can't wait to see what people come up with.

It’s pretty hard to recognize people in the video. Some look familiar, but I’m not sure who they are.
