I have seen a lot of negative reviews to this single/video. Mostly I understand that. It's not Taylor's best work. Not even close.

Personally, I think the overall message is more important than if the song is lyrically strong. But I also don’t believe that every song Taylor puts out needs to be deep and complex or whatever. It’s not bad to have songs that just sound good. I just hope the reason why people dislike it isn’t because of the message. It’s 2019. No one deserves to be discriminated or judged and if they disagree with that, kindly head to the nearest exit.

I think the song is good and she's clever with words and music so her songs aren't always going to be slow or really personal.

I think this is one of my favorite parts of the video, I like her expression and hand when she sings that part.

They were not bashing Taylor and the writers were not against the LGBT communities. They pointed out various things: the weak music that doesn't differ from any random song; the forced lyrics, the mix of speaking about personal haters and LGBT hate in one song; trying to send a message but hardly saying anything. I don't expect Taylor to only write deep and complex songs. But I do expect her to write quality music and come up with eloquent/matching lyrics. She did that easily on her first 5 albums, but somehow she lost it for reputation. Reputation wasn't the best time of her life, so I assumed it would be a temporary thing. I hoped she would come back strong. ME! sounded promising, but You Need To Calm Down makes me wonder if we will be exposed to something mediocre like reputation again. I hope not...
