Paris - Stumbled down pretend alleyways Cheap wine, make believe it's champagne
I don’t even know what I hear, but not that. Something like “pretend Allie wears cheap wine, make believe it’s champagne”
Paris- I mean, the kind under where a tree has grown
“The kind underwear something about a tree”

So if you want your panties on the ground or in the pool, you go girl!

The entire content of Karma makes no sense whatsoever. So if you want your panties on the ground or in the pool, you go girl! how does it not make sense? Karma is like a justice system from a higher power to make you aware that your actions have consequences. The song is about a sort of petty revenge on a guy. Like karma will pick Taylor’s side and punish others. That kind of hubris would most likely put Taylor in her place. Also the metaphors and rhymes she uses are pretty silly.

I think the concept of karma has been so oversimplified here in the west that when most people talk about it here, they’re mostly referring to the notion of “what goes around comes around” and “if you do good things/good things would happen to you and vice versa”. Taylor’s basically just saying “I’ve been good so good things are happening to me, you’ve been bad (specifically to me) so now bad thing are happening to you. I think the song is fun and silly but it’s not my fave on midnights.

And it’s not about you judging other’s actions, especially not if it involves you. Taylor pretty much butchered the entire concept. For the record I want to state that I don’t hate the song. It’s a fun tune. Just without meaning, at least not a sensible one.

I’m just trying to say that the way Taylor butchered it is actually exactly how most Americans butcher the concept. It’s not unique to Taylor in the slightest. Of course butchering deeply spiritual and religious concepts to be adjustable and useable for your own means is the American way.

I didn't really think of it as a petty revenge song. She could have definitely went in that direction with the song by talking about how exactly karma is impacting the other person negatively but instead she talks about all the positive things in her life that she thinks is the result of her karma. She stated why she thinks karma is on her side when she said she keeps her side of the street clean and then she says the consequences of that in the chorus.

But it’s there. That’s Taylor’s general message for a while now: I’m doing so great now with my new boyfriend, eat that, people from my past. It’s highly questionable if that’s the actual reality.

I know Swifties don't like to hear this but what else can Taylor write about besides her current and past relationships? Of course she has a few songs that are outside of this but relationships are the predominant theme in her songs. Pop music in general is mostly about relationships too.

Take Midnights for example. It was a great opportunity for so many other subjects. I can understand other artists sticking with shallow love songs. Their music is heavily commercialized and some aren’t that bright. But Taylor writes her own songs and is smart. I don’t really understand why she sticks to mostly one subject so firmly. It makes you wonder what is going on in her mind. One of the things that bothered me a lot about Reputation, was that a lot of beef and frustration got dumbed down to “here’s my new boyfriend in your face”.

She has to make her music relatable but her life is not like the average person so it must be difficult to have relatable subjects. We all experience love and she's talked about sickness/death. Recently she's discussed her mental issues in anti Hero but got pooped on and caved in so she'll probably stray from that subject in the future.
