The little piano thing at the end of Champange Problems. Almost doesn't fit because it's playful but helps you remember that it's a fictional story too. The thing was not a bad idea, but poorly executed. It’s too random and doesn’t really match the song. Speaking of Champagne Problems. I don’t really buy the fictional stuff. There’s at least something connected to real events. With Mister Harris and Mister Hiddlestone we have two potential victims of Taylor’s crimes. Personally I think it was our DJ boy.

On the contrary I think it was inspired by book or tv show. It kind of reminds me of Jo and Laurie from Little Women. It also kind of reminds me of Rory and Logan from Gilmore Girls. Both have had a Renaissance in the last couple of years.

I don't really like to speculate on Taylor's relationships (as they are private) but by little things she's said in song lyrics and about her life at the time it sounds like Calvin checked out of the relationship long before Taylor broke it off. By the sounds of it they were only seeing each other at their gigs and not even spending much time together at those gigs("I have a boyfriend he's older than us, he's in the club doing I don't know what" in Gorgeous and her saying "I didn’t have a partner I could high-five. I had my mom. But I just wondered shouldn’t I have someone I could call right now?" in Miss Americana about the time after she won the album of the year grammy for 1989) and Taylor was just convincing herself that she was in love with him still when she wasn't ("he poisoned the well, I was lying to myself" - from Getaway Car). I think the Nils Sjoberg thing was just the last straw for her and when all the Kanye stuff started happening and people starting turning against Taylor it was an opportune time for Calvin to publicly break-up with her and trash her in the press. I was happy to see Taylor leave him. I don't think the relationship was very healthy.

That’s common with celebrity couples. But Taylor posed with jewelry of her beau and everything seemed great. That’s why there were rumors of an engagement. Two months later she was in a relationship with Tom Hiddlestone. The stabs from Calvin at Taylor came after that. Not that weird, since Taylor pretty much cheated on Calvin. He actually let her off easy and regained his cool quickly and stopped being angry publicly. And of course we all know the story of Taylor just using Tom to get to Joe. It pains me to say it, but Taylor should not play the victim in this. Her justifications are weak and uncalled for.

Obviously no one really knows all the details of what happened. It’s been years and they both seem to have gotten over it. I’m not saying Taylor shouldn’t be held accountable for what happened but there were obviously issues on both sides and I think at the end the relationship wasn’t healthy for either of them. But, to go back to the original question; no I don’t think they were engaged. I think that was just tabloid speculation.

But that’s why I wondered if the song was about Taylor turning down Calvin’s proposal (and ring). It would also explain a song like Paper Rings. Taylor thinking: “I turned down a shiny ring from Calvin, but I would marry Joe if he offered me a paper ring”.

Taylor thinking: “I turned down a shiny ring from Calvin, but I would marry Joe if he offered me a paper ring”. I think in the grand scheme of things, her relationship with Calvin was relatively short. It was longer than her other relationships at the time but, it still only lasted about a year and a half so, there could be a lot of factors. Maybe Calvin was talking about engagement and Taylor wasn't ready yet or vice versa, maybe they weren't even thinking about it at all. I don't think "Paper Rings" was meant as a dig at Calvin (or at anybody), I didn't read it that way. I think it was just a "I love Joe so much that I would marry him if he were penniless" type deal. It's hard to say what went down between them but things happen for a reason. It funny how this went from me talking about the Piano roll at the end of a song to the seriousness or un-seriousness of one of Taylor's relationships. It's always fun when discussion take a turn. Lol

I’ve stated to my circle of friends this fact. Both Folklore and the sister/brother album evermore are basically of Taylor helmed two albums by The National. Aaron’s influence is all over both and even Matt’s on Coney Island.
I would say if you put Boxer and I Am Easy To Find had two kids and Taylor was the mother, this would be those albums. I’m so glad this is turning on more people to a band that both Taylor and I adore. Plus hearing her song with Matt and everyone in The National via Coney Island is pure magic to me.
Where I get the idea that this is a mix of Boxer and I Am Easy To Find is the song Closure. This song is clear The National track right from the opening. This reminded me of things when I listened to I Am Easy To Find. Which their vinyl records and subsequently evermore AREN’T, but this is an appreciation post so I won’t go negative haha.

not to be loud, but the beginning of closure sounds like a very big machine crashing/breaking.
