During my web surfing today, I came across this video about Courtney Hadwin, who was a contestant on 2018's "America's Got Talent".
The video claims that after she went back to school she was bullied for her "eccentric taste in rock music", and that she went over well with American (and Canadian) audiences so well because of the differing cultures.
I just want to focus on the "eccentric taste in rock music".
Aren't a crap ton of the big names in rock from the UK? Off the top of my head I can think of:
- The Rolling Stones,
- The Beattles,
- The Who,
- Rod Stewart,
- Black Sabbath,
- Judas Preist,
- Iron Maiden
and I'm pretty sure queen was from the UK as well.
I generally don't watch talent or singing shows, but my folks do, and they told me I might like her, so I listened to a couple of Courtney's performances and I did like it, finally someone was bringing good music to those shows.
Can someone from the UK please tell me that this is a joke, and the rock music is not seen as eccentric? Please?
Just last night on the way to and from my cousins house for a party (1 hour drive each way), I had my walkman with me listening to my Alice Cooper "Hey Stupid", and Tom Petty "Full Moon Fever" cassettes.
90% of the pre-recorded cassettes I buy at thrift stores and some local second hand shops, virtually all of my vinyl, and virtually all of my 8-tracks fit under the umbrella of "rock" which I consider to be anything from soft-rock/classic rock to heavy metal and even black metal.
I have lots of great artists on analog formats, stuff like Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, Heart, Tom Petty, The Beattles, Queen, Rush, Meatloaf, Aerosmith, Steppenwolf, Joan Jett, Stevie Nicks, Mick Jagger, Kim Mitchell, Pat Benatar, and the list goes on.
Honestly, if I was still in school and Courtney Hadwin went to mine, I'd think she's super cool and instead of bullying her, I'd befriend her.
But hey, I've already caught myself using the term "back in my day" when talking about things I did as a child which wouldn't fly today (like shooting my townhouse complex up with cap guns), so maybe I am already beginning to lose touch with the younger generation and am not far from also saying things like "get off my lawn"?
P.S: This is cross posted from a music forum I am on focusing on analog audio so that's what explains the references to analog audio formats. I just thought I'd share it with you guys and gals as well.
