South America is home to the largest rainforest in the world. The Amazon Rainforest is 2,123,562 square miles (4,000,000 square kilometers) in area. It's basin is roughly equivalent in size to the 48 contiguous states of the United States. The world's largest freshwater lake in terms of water volume is Lake Baikai in southern Russia. It contains a water volume of about 5,521 cubic miles (23,013 cubic kilometers) of water. This is approximately 20 per cent of Earth's freshwater. Lake Baikai is also the world's deepest lake.
