This isn't a book but it is a play which I had to study as one of my pieces for English lit. "A Dolls House" by Ibsen is incredibly eye opening to the constraints within marriage for women within a patriarchal society. It is set in Norway around early 1900s I believe, and the main character Nora, while slightly annoying at times with her immature portrayal, also has a lot of depth to her character which Ibsen explores as he unravels the secrets that have been weighing Nora down. I don't want to ruin anything but it really does make you aware of the way men shift in behaviour when things suddenly go their way and how much control they have over women whether it be in a marriage or as a parent. The ending of the play was actually so controversial for the time that it was banned from dinner tables in Norway which really emphasises the volume it spoke.
