Janet Jackson is criminally underrated.

I really should listen to the full special edition of this album. When I think of my childhood in Canada in the early 2000's, I HAVE to think of the impact of Avril Lavigne. I was 7 when this album came out. I remember Complicated being the song of the summer. Screaming it out the windows of my aunt's car. I think of how impactful it was for young girls to be told that it's okay to wear baggy skater clothes and ties. That just because you're a girl doesn't mean you have to be pretty, pink and sparkly all the time. Though I wouldn't necessarily call Avril a "rock" artists, she introduced a lot of people to that genre who may not have been exposed to it otherwise. I remember the silly petty things like girls arguing about whether Hilary Duff or Avril were the best (they were BOTH the best, they just weren't really comparable) and Avril and her band causing trouble on the MMVA red carpet. I don't know. I see artists like Taylor and Olivia bringing Avril out on stage with them at their concerts talking about her influence on them and it's magnificent but also different because to me, at 7 years old, even though Avril was this huge rockstar she was also an ordinary Canadian girl. She grew up in a small town in Ontario, she was a mischievous teen and she was living the dream. It was a special time in pop culture to experience. All this to say, Happy 20 Years to the Let Go album. An important soundtrack to mine and many other's childhoods. Here's one of my favourite tracks from that album.

Avril posted her take on Kelly Clarkson's hit (which was actually written by Avril herself, and was originally planned to be included in Let Go). Really hits different when the songwriter herself sings her own song, eh?

I also thought it was funny that she changed rain to snow, that is the Canadian experience.

Speaking of Canadian experience, Avril just curated this F1 playlist on Spotify for this year's Canadian GP. Would have loved to see more of her songs on the list, though.

Some songs are explicit.
I’ll be updating as I discover more music.
